250 GSM vs 180 GSM t-shirts

GSM is grams per square metre: the weight of one square metre of the fabric. It tells you how much material is in the cloth, which sets its thickness, drape and opacity. It does not tell you the fibre, the yarn quality, the knit, the finishing or the stitching. A 250 GSM tee made from short, coarse cotton will pill and twist; a 180 GSM tee from long-staple combed cotton will outlast it. Treat GSM as a description of character, not a grade.

• Drape. Falls close to the body; suits a regular fit.
• Heat. The most comfortable choice for a Dhaka afternoon in May.
• Layering. Sits flat under an open shirt.
• Weakness. Cut oversized it can cling and crease rather than hold a shape, and lighter fabric shows wear sooner at the collar.

• Structure. Holds a boxy, oversized silhouette on its own. This is why premium oversized tees are usually heavy.
• Hand feel. Dense and substantial; reads as expensive in hand and on camera.
• Durability. More material at the collar and hems, so it keeps its shape longer if the cotton is good.
• Weakness. Warmer, slower to dry, and heavier when wet. In the monsoon a 250 GSM tee takes its time on the line.

There is no single answer, because the climate has two halves. From March to October, humidity is the enemy and a 180 to 200 GSM cotton regular fit is the sensible daily wear. For the oversized look in the same months, a 200 to 220 GSM cotton is the compromise that holds shape without cooking you. From November to February, 250 GSM comes into its own and a heavyweight oversized tee is the most comfortable thing you own. Whatever the weight, choose cotton or cotton-rich fabric; polyester blends at any GSM trap heat.

• Ask what the fibre is. "250 GSM" with no fibre named is half a fact.
• Look at the collar. A ribbed collar with a proper band is a better sign of quality than any number.
• Look at the photos. A heavyweight tee photographed on real stock shows its structure; a supplier render shows nothing.
• Wash it once. Good cotton at any weight softens; bad cotton at any weight pills and twists at the side seams.
• Trust the brand's checks. Menlab checks fabric weight on the actual stock before listing, alongside stitching and colourfastness, and states the weight where it matters.

A heavier, denser fabric gives a print a flatter, more even surface, so designs on a 220 to 250 GSM tee tend to look cleaner and sit better after washing. Lighter tees print fine but show fabric texture through large solid areas.
