What an oversized t-shirt actually is
An oversized tee is not a regular tee in a bigger size. It is a different pattern: wider through the chest and body, a shoulder seam that sits down the upper arm (the drop shoulder), a wider and often shorter sleeve, and usually extra length. Because the pattern is different, your usual size gives you the intended loose look. Sizing down to "make it fit" defeats the cut and pulls the dropped shoulder seam back up to the wrong place.

Fabric weight: why it matters more for oversized
A loose cut needs fabric with body. A light tee (around 180 GSM) cut oversized clings and creases; a heavyweight one (220 to 250 GSM) holds the boxy shape and reads as premium. That is why most good oversized tees are heavier. In our climate the trade-off is warmth, so look for 100% cotton or cotton-rich fabric that breathes even when it is heavy.
